A reminder that the healthcare needs of our citizens can only be addressed through the constant attention to the quality of professional education and continued lifelong learning.
Mae Orvis, commodities broker, opera singer, and philanthropist, was a native of Brooklyn, NY who called Reno, NV her home from 1939 until her passing in 1996. Mrs. Orvis and her late husband Arthur Emerton Orvis, co-founded the Orvis School of Nursing at the University of Nevada, Reno, which admitted its first class of nursing students in 1957. From the beginning, Mrs. Orvis envisioned a School of Nursing that would
"not only be held in high regard for its exemplary programs, but also, serve as insurance for the health of Nevadans.”
Mrs. Orvis’ commitment to nursing education included the establishment of an Endowed Professorship for the Orvis School of Nursing. Her foresight in establishing the Orvis School of Nursing at the University of Nevada, Reno has benefitted thousands of nurses who are graduates of the school and the patients who have received care from our graduates. Mrs. Orvis leaves a legacy for us as well as a reminder that the healthcare needs of our citizens can only be addressed through the constant attention to the quality of professional education and continued lifelong learning.
